Waterfall

Category: Journal

It is finally time I get around to posting about the summer and into fall long project that I have been working on. Since we have moved into this house we have done lots of things to the yard but the one thing that has always bugged me the most has been this one corner in the backyard that I can see from the kitchen window. This corner has basically been a weed haven and was just slightly to steep and dry for grass. I have always wanted to have a waterfall and pond but with the boys ponds are just not the way to go. However, a pondless waterfall or disappearing waterfall started to intrigue me. So one Saturday afternoon in June I just up and started digging away.

Since the intial breaking ground it has been long couple of months slowly picking away at this project in the corner. Most of the summer was spent digging the basin, building up the slope, shaping the area and cleaning out the underbrush beside the corner and behind the bushes which can been seen to the left of the pictures below (this is version 2.0 of this whole project). This basically brought me up to October with the build out of the actual waterfall being over the Thanksgiving long weekend. It has been a really fun project although very sore and tiring and I estimate about 5 tonnes of rock has been hauled. In the end I am super happy with the end result especially not having a clue what I was doing going into it (aside from the numerous hours I spent researching). I have just managed to get some planting in around the feature and some lighting in which amazingly enough was only 2 weeks ago and 1 week before the picture of the falls in the snow.

The waterfall has been turned off and the pump removed for the winter now and is awaiting the spring when I can get started on completing the landscaping around the feature. This will lead into Version 2 of the project with some fixing up of the area and more lighting in the backyard hopefully bringing the backyard to final completion.
